What the town's year actually looks like

San Gimignano has 7,780 residents and does not need a festival to fill itself. Its calendar is therefore a visitor calendar, and the useful information is about when the town is bearable rather than what is scheduled.

• Easter — among the busiest weeks of the year. Book everything or avoid it.
• Summer — concerts and performances use the squares and the courtyards, which is the best way to see them: the centre at night, with the towers lit and the day visitors gone.
• September — the Vernaccia harvest. Not a ticketed event, but the most interesting time to visit a producer, and the hardest time to get their full attention.
• Christmas — the town comes out into its own squares, and for a few weeks the centre belongs to the people who live in it.

The museums, year-round

The civic museums ticket — €10 full, €8 reduced, a €1 booking fee, valid one day — covers the Palazzo Comunale with the Pinacoteca and the Torre Grossa, the Complesso di Santa Chiara and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Ponte. The Complesso della Collegiata is separate: €7 full, €6 for groups of at least twenty, €4 reduced. Entry is free for the youngest children, disabled visitors and their companions, residents of the comune and authorised guides.

The civic museums open 10:00–19:30 from 1 April to 31 October, with last entry at 19:00; 11:00–17:30 from 1 November to 31 March, last entry 17:00; and 10:30–18:30 from 26 December to 6 January, last entry 18:00. They are closed on 25 December. The Collegiata keeps its own hours in the 1 April to 31 October season — 10:00–19:30 Monday to Friday, 10:00–16:30 on Saturday, 12:30–19:30 on Sunday and holidays — and these can change at short notice for services.

The one piece of timing advice that matters

Not an event, but more useful than any of them: the coaches arrive late morning and leave by late afternoon. Before 10:00 and after 16:00 this is a different town. Everything else about planning a visit here is secondary to that.
