Corpus Domini, which started here

Orvieto's own day is Corpus Domini, and the town has a particular claim on it: the feast was instituted here by Pope John XXII in 1316, commemorating the miracle of Bolsena of 1263 whose relic is kept in the cathedral's Cappella del Corporale. The procession that marks it is the largest occasion in the Orvieto year and the one time the town fills with Orvietani rather than visitors.

One practical note: it is a moveable feast tied to Easter rather than a fixed calendar date, so it must be looked up for the year in question rather than assumed.

The cathedral's own calendar

Outside that, what shapes a visit is the Opera del Duomo di Orvieto, which runs the cathedral and its chapels. Its ticketing is worth understanding before arriving: a Carta Unica covers museums, monuments and art sites together from €25; the Museo Etrusco “Claudio Faina” can be added to a cathedral ticket for €3 more; and audio guides are unlocked through the Opera's own app once you hold a ticket, rather than hired at a desk.

The underground runs to a schedule

The cave tours are the other thing to plan around, because the only way into Orvieto's subterranean system is on a guided visit at set times. A visitor who turns up intending to see the caves without checking the schedule frequently does not see them.

Autumn

September and October bring the vintage and the first black truffle, and the town's food and wine calendar concentrates there. Orvieto Classico is produced on the slopes below the rock and aged in cellars cut into it, which makes the harvest a genuinely local event rather than a staged one.
