Spoleto
How to get around Spoleto
Getting around
Spoleto is a steep walled city, and the answer to the slope is a public system of car parks and mechanised climbs run by Busitalia. Using it is not a convenience, it is the way in.
The three car parks and their climbs
- Spoletosfera — 420 spaces, connected by a percorso meccanizzato of moving walkways and lifts.
- Posterna — 454 spaces, nine of them reserved for disabled drivers, with escalators and lifts coming out at the Teatro Nuovo, Piazza Pianciani, Via A. Saffi and Via Gattapone. This is the one that lands you closest to the Duomo.
- Ponzianina — 90 cars, 13 coaches and 22 campervans, with escalators climbing to the Rocca Albornoziana. Use this one if the Rocca is your first stop, because it saves the hardest part of the ascent.
The routes run on winter hours from 2 November to 31 May and summer hours from 1 June to 1 November, with the closing time varying by car park and by day of the week — later on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays. Check the current board at the car park, because the Festival changes them.
From 1 September 2026, parking between 20:30 and 3:00 is free.
The traffic zones
There are two, and the distinction matters. ZTL A is open to unauthorised vehicles on weekdays from 6:00 to 20:30 between 4 May and 13 September, and closed around the clock at weekends and on holidays; entry is from viale Matteotti at the quadrivio, piazza San Domenico, piazzetta Porta San Lorenzo and the road outside the walls. ZTL A1 is closed 24 hours a day, on weekdays, weekends and holidays alike.
On foot
Once you are up, everything is walkable — but the town is on a slope and some of it is stepped. The Rocca is 57 metres above the cathedral. Shoes with grip, and use the lifts.

Connections from Spoleto
How easily, and at what cost, can you combine the region’s main destinations?
| Route | Best option | One-way time | Travel Smart take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spoleto and Assisi | Train | ~45 min typical, not a timetable | Comfortable as a day trip. Spoleto is a workable base for Assisi. |
| Spoleto and Perugia | Train | ~1 hr typical, not a timetable | Comfortable as a day trip. |
Cost compares the options for each route rather than quoting a fare: inexpensive means the price is not a factor in planning, moderate cost means a real line in the budget, and the expensive option is one worth weighing against the alternative. Fares change from year to year; the ranking between them does not.
Arriving by train
Spoleto has its own station, below the walled city, on the regional line through the Umbrian valley. From the station the mechanised routes and local buses reach the centre; the walk is possible but it is uphill the whole way.
Arriving by car
Do not drive into the historic centre. Head for one of the three car parks outside the walls:
- Spoletosfera, 420 spaces, with a moving-walkway and lift route into the centre.
- Posterna, 454 spaces including nine reserved for disabled drivers, with escalators and lifts exiting at the Teatro Nuovo, Piazza Pianciani, Via A. Saffi and Via Gattapone.
- Ponzianina, 90 cars, 13 coaches and 22 campervans, with escalators to the Rocca Albornoziana — the right choice for coaches and campervans, and for anyone starting at the fortress.
All three are operated by Busitalia, which also runs the mechanised routes. Seasons: winter from 2 November to 31 May, summer from 1 June to 1 November. Closing times differ by car park and are later on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of holidays — the Ponzianina escalators in particular run later in summer than in winter. From 1 September 2026, parking between 20:30 and 3:00 is free.
The traffic zones, in detail
ZTL A: open to unauthorised vehicles on weekdays 6:00 to 20:30 in the 4 May to 13 September period; closed 24 hours at weekends and on holidays. Access points are viale Matteotti (quadrivio), piazza San Domenico, piazzetta Porta San Lorenzo and the via esterna delle mura.
ZTL A1: closed 24 hours a day, every day of the week, to unauthorised vehicles.
The municipality reissues both timetables for the Festival dei Due Mondi, so in late June and early July the standard hours do not apply. Check the current notice.
Travelling on without a car
Busitalia runs the intercity buses, and the fare is banded by distance: Fascia A up to 7 km through Fascia R at 100.01–110 km, with single tickets from €1.30 to €8.60. Buy before you board — on-board purchase costs €2.00 to €9.50, about €0.70 to €1.50 more. Tickets are valid for a single journey and must be validated at each boarding. For a longer stay, weekly passes run €12 to €35, monthly €40 to €113 and annual €237 to €953, with reduced rates for over-65s and students.
Busitalia also sells integrated regional travel titles for Umbria — Umbria Vai and Umbria.GO — at its own counters and Trenitalia's. If you intend Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto from a Spoleto base, ask which of them covers your itinerary.
Information on the ground
The tourist office is at via del Mercato 18, open daily 9:00–13:30 and 14:30–18:00. It is the right place to confirm the current mechanised-route hours and museum times, both of which move seasonally.
