Spoleto is a fortress city in east central Umbria that sits on a foothill of the Apennines.
Spoleto is surrounded by medieval walls and a magnificent gorge. Roman palaces and monuments stand along the narrow alleys of the old town.
Important sights in Spoleto include the 12th-century Duomo Cathedral with its beautiful rose window and mosaics as well as the Ponte delle Torri, an old Roman bridge spanning the deep ravine between Spoleto and the adjacent mountain. In late June and early July Spoleto hosts the world-famous Spoleto Festival, featuring great music, dance, and theater attracting many visitors to the town.
Active travelers can take a bike and follow the “Sentiero Degli Ulivi” (Olive Grove trail) that starts in Spoleto and ends in Assisi. The 50 miles long itinerary unwinds along paths and gravel roads and is interesting as it gives evidence of the importance of the olive production in this area.
