Origins

A timber bridge stood here from at least 1209, on the route between the Veneto plain and the Valsugana. Floods and log drives carried it away with grim regularity.

Turning points

After the bridge was destroyed yet again in 1567, the town commissioned Palladio. His 1569 design accepted that the river would win eventually, and made rebuilding fast and exact instead of trying to resist it.

Influential people

The design has been kept faithfully through every reconstruction since -- an unusual case of a Renaissance architect's drawing remaining the working specification for four and a half centuries.

Cultural evolution

Retreating German forces blew it up in 1945. It was rebuilt in 1948 by the Alpini, Italy's mountain infantry, and formally took their name; the association is central to the town's identity.

Present-day significance

A major structural restoration, addressing decades of decay in the timber and piers, was completed in 2022.
