Sacrario Militare del Monte Grappa

On the summit of Monte Grappa, 1,775 metres above the plain, a vast circular ossuary holds the remains of more than twenty thousand soldiers from both sides of the First World War. It is a war grave and a monument at once, and the drive up to it is one of the great mountain roads of the Veneto.
Visit Responsibly
This is a cemetery holding more than twenty thousand people, most of them unidentified and many of them teenagers. It is also a spectacular viewpoint, and the two facts sit uneasily together. Quiet, and no picnicking on the terraces.
Monte Grappa has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2021 and is also working upland pasture. Stay on marked paths, close gates behind you, and take everything out with you.
Unexploded ordnance is still occasionally found on the massif. Do not pick up metal objects, and stick to established routes.
Plan Your Visit
Free and open. The summit is reached by road from Bassano (about an hour) or from Romano d'Ezzelino and Semonzo; the road is closed in winter and can be shut by snow well into spring.
There is a small museum and a refuge near the summit. Allow most of a day from Bassano, and check the forecast before setting out -- the summit makes its own weather.
