Origins

The breakwater itself is a piece of coastal engineering: heavy stone blocks armouring the shore at the point where Caorle's promontory meets the open Adriatic, protecting the old town from storms.

Turning points

In 1993 the town began inviting sculptors to work the stone in place, turning maintenance rock into a permanent exhibition. The idea was straightforward and has proved unusually durable.

Influential people

Sculptors from Italy and abroad have taken part over the decades, working on site during periodic symposia rather than delivering finished pieces.

Cultural evolution

Because the carvings are exposed to salt, spray and storm, they weather -- and that weathering is part of the work rather than damage to it. Older pieces are visibly softer than recent ones.

Present-day significance

It has become Caorle's signature, and one of the few places where a resort town's public art is genuinely tied to what the place physically is.
