Practical Information for visiting Chioggia

Chioggia's old town is small, flat and entirely walkable -- Corso del Popolo takes fifteen minutes end to end, and everything is on or just off it.

From Venice the pleasant route is the seasonal ferry and bus combination via the Lido and Pellestrina, which takes about an hour and a half and is worth doing for the journey. Buses also run direct from Piazzale Roma, and there is a railway station at Chioggia with a slow line to Rovigo.

Padua is about an hour by bus or car; Venice by road is roughly an hour, longer than the map suggests because of the lagoon.

Sottomarina is across the bridge, ten minutes on foot or a short bus ride, and the beach runs several kilometres from there.

Mobile coverage is complete across the town, the lagoon edge and the beach. Nothing about connectivity here needs planning.

EU visitors roam on their own plans; others can buy a prepaid SIM at operator shops on the Corso, with a passport for registration. Wi-Fi is standard in hotels and cafés.

Chioggia is a safe working town. The cautions are about water rather than crime.

• Acqua alta floods the lowest streets in autumn and winter, briefly and predictably. Tide forecasts are published; boots are sold locally for a reason.
• The Adriatic at Sottomarina is shallow and generally gentle, but currents near the port inlet are strong and swimming there is a bad idea.
• The fish market is a working commercial space early in the morning, with vehicles and ice underfoot -- watch where you stand.
• Petty theft is uncommon; ordinary care around the ferry and bus terminals is enough.

Chioggia has a public hospital with an emergency department serving the southern lagoon area, and pharmacies through the old town and Sottomarina operate a night and holiday rota.

EU visitors with a valid EHIC are treated on the same terms as residents; non-EU visitors should carry travel health insurance.

Tap water is safe to drink. Seasonal considerations are summer heat and humidity, mosquitoes on the lagoon edge and reclaimed land from late spring through autumn, and strong sun on the beach with little natural shade.

Single emergency number: 112, free from any phone, covering police, fire and ambulance.

Coastguard: 1530, for anything at sea or in the lagoon.

Hospital with emergency department: Ospedale di Chioggia, serving the southern lagoon.

Police: the Polizia di Stato and Carabinieri both have stations here; a formal denuncia is required for almost any insurance claim.

Lost passport: contact your own country's embassy or consulate, most of which are in Rome or Milan.
