Practical Information for visiting Cittadella

Cittadella is flat, small and entirely walkable -- crossing the walled town from gate to gate takes about ten minutes.

The station is a few minutes' walk from Porta Bassano, on the Padua-Bassano line. Padua is about 30 minutes, Bassano about 20, and Venice about an hour with a change at Padua. This is one of the most convenient towns in the Veneto to reach without a car.

The rampart walk is entered at Porta Bassano and takes 45 minutes to an hour at an easy pace. There are stairs, and the walkway is not step-free.

Driving in the walled centre is restricted; park outside the moat and walk in through a gate, which is a better arrival anyway.

Mobile coverage is complete and reliable across the town and the surrounding plain -- there is no terrain here to interfere with it.

EU visitors roam on their own plans; others can buy a prepaid SIM at operator shops in the centre, with a passport for registration. Cafés offer Wi-Fi, and the municipality provides free access in the main squares.

Cittadella is a quiet, safe provincial town with essentially no crime issue for visitors.

• The rampart walk is the one real hazard. It runs at about 15 metres with a parapet on the outer side; it is safe but exposed, and it involves stairs. Not suitable for anyone unsteady, and worth close supervision with children.
• No shade on the walls. In summer take water and go early or late -- heat, not crime, is what causes problems here.
• Winter fog makes the walk pointless for views and the surrounding roads genuinely dangerous to drive.
• Wet brick after rain is slippery on the walkway and the stairs.

Cittadella has a public hospital with an emergency department serving the northern Padua area, which makes it better provided than most towns of its size in this rollout.

EU visitors with a valid EHIC are treated on the same terms as residents; non-EU visitors should carry travel health insurance. Pharmacies in the centre run a rota for nights and holidays, posted in the window.

Tap water is safe to drink. Seasonal considerations are summer heat on the exposed walkway and mosquitoes on the plain from late spring through autumn.

Single emergency number: 112, free from any phone, covering police, fire and ambulance.

Hospital with emergency department: Ospedale di Cittadella, on the edge of the town.

Police: the local Carabinieri and municipal police both operate here; a formal denuncia is required for almost any insurance claim.

Lost passport: contact your own country's embassy or consulate, most of which are in Rome or Milan.
