Origins

A fortification stood here from at least the twelfth century, on the Marzenego in the contested ground between Treviso, Padua and the rising power of Venice.

Turning points

The Tempesta family built and rebuilt the castle across the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, ruling Noale as a small feudal lordship from it. The surviving walls are largely their work.

Influential people

In 1339 Noale passed with Treviso to Venice, and the Tempesta lordship ended. The Republic had no frontier to defend here, and the castle's military purpose disappeared within a generation.

Cultural evolution

Left without a function, the interior buildings decayed and were removed, leaving only the walls, the towers and the moat. That neglect is why the fortification survives at all: nobody modernised it for artillery and nobody needed the ground.

Present-day significance

Restored and opened as a public park in the modern period, the Rocca is now Noale's own space -- a medieval fortress used as the town's garden and summer stage.
