Palazzo di Giustizia Site Features

The palace is a modest but correct example of Venetian Gothic: a facade of two main storeys, with a range of pointed arched windows and a small balcony on the upper floor.

The window group is the giveaway. Venetian Gothic clusters its openings toward the centre of the facade, leaving solid wall at the corners -- a plan that came from lagoon building and had no structural reason to appear inland, but was copied anyway because it was the style of the capital.

Traces of fresco survive on the plaster, along with an old inscribed stone set into the front.

Next to it on the same street stands the Palazzo Cavalli, of the same period and style -- the two together give the short main street its Venetian character.

The Gothic window range

The pointed-arch openings grouped across the upper floor, the building's defining feature and a direct quotation of Venetian palace design.

Fresco fragments

What survives of the painted facade, and a reminder that most Veneto palaces of this date were colourful rather than plain.

The setting

The palace sits on the short arcaded main street between the two town gates, which is Soave's entire civic centre.
