Origins

The park opened in 1975 on farmland behind the lake, at a moment when Italy had no large theme park of its own and Garda's tourism was already established.

Turning points

It expanded steadily through the 1980s and 1990s, adding the roller coasters and themed areas that made it a destination in its own right rather than a day out from the lake.

Influential people

Ownership passed to Merlin Entertainments in 2006, the group behind Legoland and Madame Tussauds, which brought it into an international portfolio.

Cultural evolution

A Sea Life aquarium, themed hotels and a Legoland water park were added, turning a day attraction into a multi-day resort.

Present-day significance

Gardaland is now among the most visited theme parks in Europe, and its Halloween and Christmas seasons are among its busiest periods -- which extends the southern shore's season well beyond the summer.

Publishing will make these pending changes visible on the live page.
