Peschiera del Garda Fortress Historical Timeline

Origins

The site controls the lake's only outflow, which made it strategically obvious: whoever held Peschiera held the water route between Garda and the Po plain. There was a Roman settlement, and a Scaliger castle after it.

Turning points

From the sixteenth century Venice rebuilt the defences to the new bastioned geometry that gunpowder had forced on European fortification -- low, angled, thick, and designed to deflect artillery rather than stand up to it.

Influential people

Napoleon took and strengthened it. After 1815 Austria made it one of the four fortresses of the Quadrilatero, with Verona, Mantua and Legnago -- the defensive square that let Austria hold Lombardy-Venetia through two wars of Italian independence.

Cultural evolution

The town spent centuries as a garrison, and its street plan and building stock still reflect a place designed around a military function.

Present-day significance

In 2017 the fortress was inscribed by UNESCO within Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries, a listing spread across Italy, Croatia and Montenegro.
