Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: flip this switch on and Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- turn it off again any time, or reveal the real photo for just one place at a time from its own page.

The Arena di Verona Opera Festival (June-September) is the city's defining annual event -- open-air opera and ballet performances in the Roman amphitheater, running most years since 1913, with a mix of classic productions (Aida is a recurring staple) and newer stagings.

Vinitaly, held each spring at the Verona exhibition center, is one of the world's largest wine trade fairs, drawing an international trade and industry crowd rather than casual visitors -- it fills hotels citywide during its run.

Verona's Christmas market, in Piazza dei Signori and the surrounding streets through December, is smaller and more local in character than Venice's or Milan's equivalents, alongside an ice rink typically set up in Piazza Bra.
