Introduction
Kyushu is the Southernmost as well as the third largest of the four main islands in Japan. Kyushu is bordered by the East China Sea on the west and by the Pacific Ocean on the West. The name, Kyushu, refers to the nine ancient provinces in which the island was divided. It covers an area of 14,177 square miles and is composed of the complex volcano regions. The climate of Kyushu is subtropical and is known for its subtropical vegetation as well as its heavy rainfall. It is also home to the largest active volcano in the world, Mount Aso. The population of Kyushu as of 1990 was 13,421,791 people.
Some of the main crops grown on this island include rice, tea, tobacco, sweet potatoes, and citrus fruit. The industries that are located in the northern part of Kyushu consist of iron and steel as well as chemicals.
Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Nagasaki, Oita, and Saga are the seven regions of Kyushu. Kita-Kyshu which is the Northern industrial complex, Fukuoka which is the commercial center and Nagasaki are the chief cities within Kyushu.
Okinawa is located in the central part of the Okinawa Island. It was made a city in 1974. Okinawa was once a region made up of agriculture and forestry till WWII which is when, the U.S Kadena Military Base was located here and continued to be located there till after the occupation of Japan ended. As of 2005 Okinawa had a population of 126,400 and the city is only 67 miles long. The climate of Okinawa is semi tropical. Some of the main cultivable crops in this region are sugarcane, fruits like pineapple, papaya and banana.
