Learn about Valletta

Valletta is the capital of the Republic of Malta. It is located on the north-eastern coast of the island of Malta, in the south-eastern quarter of the island, and is the seat of a Kunsill Lokali ("local council") of the South-East region. In 2014, the city was populated by 6,444 inhabitants, called in French the Valettins.

Founded in 1566 under the name of “Très Humble Ville de La Valette” (in Latin: Humilissima Civitas Vallettae), named after the great master Jean de Valette of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, the city has many buildings from the time when this order was sovereign of the Maltese archipelago (from 1530 to 1798). Unesco has listed 320 monuments in Valletta over  ??55 hectares, an exceptional concentration in the world3; the city is also registered on its list of the world heritage of humanity since 1980. Valletta was the European capital of culture in 2018.
