The Confederation Bridge on the Northumberland Strait is the world's longest bridge over ice covered water (in winter) connecting Prince Edward Island (PEI) and New Brunswick in Eastern Canada. Spanning a distance of 12.9 kms (8 miles), opened in 1997, is officially known as Pont De La Confederation. With construction effort of more than 5000 people, approximately one billion dollars have been invested. Today, the bridge is a two lane toll highway with a permissible speed limit of 80 kms per hour taking about 10 minutes to cross. No pedestrian and two wheelers are permitted on this stretch for which shuttle services are available.

Previously the stretch was commuted through ferry services, when the bridge was much debated by the locals following a settlement with a majority poll. Green Gables has long been known as the farmhouse that set the stage for Lucy Maud Montgomery's timeless classic "Anne of Green Gables". For fans of this beautiful literature, the Green Gables Farmhouse located on Prince Edward Island, in Cavendish, is a definite must visit destination while touring Canada. In fact, each year, thousands of tourists from all parts of the world head out to the quaint village of Cavendish to visit the Green Gables Farmhouse which served as the inspiration of Montgomery's novel. In real life, the Green Gables Farmhouse was the home of David MacNeill, Jr. and his wife, Margaret, who were cousins of the author's grandfather. After the death of Montgomery in 1942, a monument and a plaque was erected in the grounds of the Green Gables Farmhouse which is the most visited part of the house even today.
