Mount Desert Island is home to the lovely and well-known town of Bar Harbor, Maine, and was originally settled by the Wabanaki tribe. Typically the most common activities in this area for the local Indians was hunting, fishing, and gathering the local native foods. It was later settled by European explorers in 1763 and incorporated as a town in 1796. Shipbuilding, lobstering, and fishing became the main sources of income to the local citizens of the town for many decades.

Even thought Bar Harbor is a significant historical area, it has become popular because of the abundance of activities in the area, including:

1. The Bar Harbor Historical Society Museum that contains many historical documents and photographs of the early settlement here.

2. The marine biology enthusiastic visitors will be sure the enjoy the Whale Museum that depicts the lives of whales and seals that are very common to the area, and they will also find the Mount Desert Oceanarium a great place to visit as well.

3. Cadillac Mountain is nearby and very popular in the summer months for some great hiking trails, and in the winter months for some of the best skiing around.

4. Camp grounds for tents and campers as well as facilities are available for RVers.

5. Water enthusiasts will have the pleasure of deep sea fishing, sailing, kayaking, or canoeing in the beautiful waters around the island.
