Portland is a city in the New England State of Maine in the United States. Its history dates back to the 17th century during which time it was known by numerous names. Finally, in the 18th century, it was named Portland after a city of the same name in Britain. The city lies on a peninsula and experiences maritime climate. The economy mostly comprises of the fishing and shipping industry as well as manufacturing industries specialising in forestry products, textiles and chemicals. Also one of the country’s main software company Intel has its huge employee base here. The fishing industry is significant and contributes vastly to the tourism and hospitality industry. The reason is simple: the city is famed for its lobsters. A visit to Portland would not be worthwhile without a taste of these lobsters. The city is home to various historical monuments. Portland prides itself for its Portland Museum of Art. This museum displays magnificent pieces of art from as far back as the 19th century. The museum is not the only place to visit to get a feel of the past. The famous poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was born here in the early 19th century. The poet was celebrated for his emotional portrayal of nature, life and other simple themes all of which were written in simple yet melodious style. The house of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is now a museum and is definitely a must see for all visitors. Because art was considered one of the essentials of life, Portland established a School of Art in 1882.
