The museum is not the only place to visit to get a feel of the past. The famous poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was born here in the early 19th century. The poet was celebrated for his emotional portrayal of nature, life and other simple themes all of which were written in simple yet melodious style. The house of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is now a museum and is definitely a must see for all visitors. Because art was considered one of the essentials of life, Portland established a School of Art in 1882.
