Rock City is quite the spectacular roadside attraction on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. Described as a 'citadel of rocks' on top of a mountain – the sightseers and visitors are stunned at the enormous size of the boulders and how they are 'arranged'. During a Civil War battle both sides claimed that seven states could be seen from the lookout of the Rock City summit.
As proclaimed on nearly 900 barns leading into the site, Rock City is a picturesque area that travelers need to see, and providing a variety of activities, such as:
1. The gardens wind along a complex trail with a multitude of strange rock formations, trees, and a huge variety of local plants. Be sure to look for the 1000 ton Balanced Rock and the Fat Man's Squeeze!
2. There are several festivals presented throughout the year that are great fun for the entire family. One of the most popular is the Summer Blooms Festival – as they say 'a Truly Southern Thing'! This is a three day event that features tours of the garden and lectures from various horticultural experts in the Frieda Utermoehlen Carter center – some will even have books to sign.
3. For those who are enamored with these powerful, majestic birds, the Rock City Raptors feature magnificent hawks circling overhead, owls, and a very vivacious vulture – what a character it is. It's a unique experience to see these incredible birds high atop a mountain.
For the nature lovers, Rock City is an amazing place to see.
