Sydney's seasons run opposite to the Northern Hemisphere's -- summer falls from December to February, and winter from June to August.
Summer (December-February) is peak season, with warm weather, beach conditions at their best, and the city's biggest events, including New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour and the Sydney Festival in January.
Autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) offer mild, comfortable weather with fewer crowds than summer, generally the most reliable shoulder-season windows.
Winter (June-August) is mild by most standards -- rarely cold enough for snow -- and is when Vivid Sydney, a large light and music festival, lights up the harbour and CBD each year.
