By the mid-19th century, the centuries-old Topkapı Palace no longer suited an empire whose sultans increasingly looked to Europe for both political alliances and architectural inspiration. Sultan Abdülmecid I commissioned a new palace on the Bosphorus, built between 1843 and 1856 on land reclaimed from the sea (the name "Dolmabahçe" itself means "filled-in garden," referencing the bay that once occupied the site).

Dolmabahçe served as the empire's main administrative center for the remainder of the Ottoman era, hosting sultans, foreign dignitaries, and the ceremonial life of the court until the monarchy's abolition in 1922. Its most historically significant modern moment came later: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk used the palace as a presidential residence during visits to Istanbul, and it was here that he died on 10 November 1938 — an event still marked by the palace's clocks, all stopped at 9:05, the official time of his death.
