San Diego
How to get around San Diego
MTS Trolley and buses
The Trolley is strongest for downtown, Old Town, Mission Valley, UC San Diego and the San Ysidro border area. Buses fill the gaps, including Route 992 between the airport and downtown. PRONTO offers two-hour transfers and daily fare capping when used correctly.
Walking and cycling
Walking works within compact districts, not across the whole city. Waterfront and beach paths are useful, but canyon breaks, freeway crossings and steep coastal streets can interrupt a route. Check the return climb as well as the outward distance.
Cars
A car helps for dispersed coastal and inland stops, but parking pressure is high at beaches, Balboa Park and event districts. Never leave visible property in a parked vehicle, and read curb, street-cleaning and time-limit signs.
Accessibility
Modern Trolley vehicles, major stations and many buses provide accessible travel, but cliffs, sand, historic thresholds and steep paths create site-level barriers. Check the specific stop, entrance and beach access rather than assuming the whole district has one standard.

Paying fares
As checked on 4 October 2026, the standard adult MTS bus, Rapid and Trolley fare is $3. PRONTO caps eligible travel at $7 a day and includes transfers for two hours; cash bus fares do not include that transfer benefit. Tap or scan before every trip.
From the airport
Route 992 links both terminals with Santa Fe Depot and downtown roughly every 15 minutes. The free San Diego Flyer connects the terminals with Old Town Transit Center. Verify operating hours for an early or late flight.
Using the Trolley
Choose it when both ends sit near the network: downtown to Old Town, Mission Valley, UC San Diego or San Ysidro. It does not directly serve every beach, La Jolla Cove or Cabrillo National Monument, so a mapped rail line can still require a bus or long walk.
Regional rail
Santa Fe Depot connects local transit with intercity and coastal rail services. Check the actual operator, because fare systems and frequencies differ and late-evening options may be limited.
Driving and parking
Allow for event traffic, beach demand and naval or convention activity. At trailheads and shore lots, confirm closing times. A vehicle simplifies a spread-out itinerary but is unnecessary for a focused downtown-and-transit stay.
