Getting around Kings Mills the Smart Way
Kings Mills is a very small place next to a very large one, and both facts are worth knowing before you come.
It is an unincorporated village of a few thousand people in Warren County, built as a company town for a gunpowder and ammunition works, and it sits immediately beside Kings Island — one of the largest amusement parks in the United States, with a third-scale Eiffel Tower at the end of its main avenue and a collection of roller coasters that draws several million visitors a year.
The village itself has the remains of the Peters Cartridge Company works, a vast brick factory with a shot tower, now converted to flats.
And the Little Miami River and its rail-trail run past, which is the quiet reason to be here.
How to Experience Kings Mills
Kings Island
A full day, or two. Around fifteen roller coasters, including one of the longest wooden coasters in the world, a large water park in summer, and a 100-metre replica of the Eiffel Tower you can ride up for a view over the Little Miami valley. The park runs from spring to the autumn Halloween season and reopens for a Christmas light event.
The Little Miami Scenic Trail
A paved rail-trail running for around 125 kilometres along the river, passing directly through the village. Bicycles can be hired in Morrow and Loveland, and the stretch through the gorge is the best of it.

Kings Mills is a company town that outlived its company and is now a suburb with an amusement park attached.
A powder village
Everything here was built by one business. The King Powder Company and its associated Peters Cartridge Company built the works, the housing, the school and the church, and the village existed to serve them. That pattern — a single employer building a complete settlement in a river valley for safety reasons — is legible in the layout, and the surnames of the founding families are on the streets.
The park’s shadow
Since 1972, Kings Island has been the area’s defining presence: its employer, its traffic, its soundtrack in summer, and the reason anybody outside Ohio has heard the name. Locals hear the coasters from their gardens.
Warren County
The surrounding county is prosperous, fast-growing and suburban, with Mason next door having expanded from a farming town into a substantial city in a generation.
Quiet
Outside the park, this is a place where very little happens, which is much of its appeal to the people who live here.
Responsible Travel Tips
This is a residential village, not an attraction. The historic district is people’s houses and the old factory is now flats; there is no visitor infrastructure, and wandering into private ground is not welcome.
The Peters Cartridge site was a federal clean-up site — a century of powder and primer manufacture left lead and other contamination in the ground and in the river sediment. Remediation has been done, but do not dig, forage or take material from the riverbank there.
The Little Miami River is a designated scenic river and its corridor is protected; use the marked access points, and take out what you carry on the trail.
At Kings Island, the practical courtesies matter: the park is cashless, the queues are long, and the staff are largely seasonal and young.

When to Visit Kings Mills
May, September and early October are the best months: the park is open with far shorter queues than midsummer, and the river and trail are at their most pleasant.
June to August is peak season at Kings Island — hot, humid, crowded and expensive, with the water park open and queues that can run to an hour or more.
Late September to early November is the park’s Halloween season, busy on Saturday nights and cold on an exposed site by late October.
Late November to early January brings the Christmas light event, with the tower lit and the park dressed for it.
January to March the park is closed and the village is very quiet; the trail is still open and good for winter walking.

The park admission, parking and in-park food are the real costs, and buying online in advance is always cheaper than at the gate. The village itself has almost nothing to spend money on.
