Sandusky’s calendar is set by the amusement park season and the water.

HalloWeekends — mid-September to early November

Cedar Point’s autumn season, and one of the larger Halloween events in the American amusement industry. The park reopens at weekends with mazes, outdoor scare zones staffed by several hundred costumed performers, live shows and the coasters running after dark, alongside a daytime programme aimed at families. It has run since 1997 and has become a substantial part of the park’s year, extending the season by two months and drawing a different crowd from the summer one — largely adults and older teenagers, on Saturday nights in particular, when queues can be longer than in July. Tickets are dated and sell out; the weather by late October is cold on an exposed peninsula and people underdress for it every year.

Cedar Point opening weekend — early May

The season opener is a local occasion, often with a new ride to launch, and the enthusiast community turns out for it.

Biggest Week in American Birding — May

Ten days centred on the marshes west of here during the warbler migration, drawing birdwatchers from around the world.

Walleye fishing season — spring and autumn

The western basin run brings charter boats, tournaments and a substantial visiting fishing population in April and May and again in the autumn, which is the town’s other seasonal economy.

Festival of Sail and waterfront events — summer

Tall ships visit periodically, and the bayfront runs a concert and market season.
