Tulsa Zoo
Overview
The Tulsa Zoo is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, near the Tulsa International Airport. It is open year-round from 9am to 5pm. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Discounts are available for school and tour groups.
The Tulsa Zoo is operated by the Tulsa Parks Department and owned by the city of Tulsa. It housed on 84 acres of land and currently displays over 2,800 animals. The zoo gets approximately 600,000 visitors a year.
Within the Tulsa Zoo is possible to see animals from North and South America, Africa, Asia, and the ocean. Within these exhibits the keepers of the Tulsa Zoo have strived to recreate the natural environment of the animals they exhibit. In some cases, indigenous human habitation is also displayed. For example, in the African area you can see a traditional Maasi village. Some of the most popular animals at the Tulsa Zoo are the big cats, sea lions, monkeys, and Asian elephants. There are daily Elephant Encounters where you can watch zookeepers train and exercise the elephants.
Education and conservation are the cornerstones of the Tulsa Zoo. They sponsor on and offsite school enrichment programs and free school tours. There is also a children's zoo where youngsters can interact with many small farm animals and view other animals up close, such as prairie dogs, kangaroos, and llamas. Many areas of the zoo sport educational signs and provide visitors with hands-on opportunities to learn more about animals. These areas can be found in the Oklahoma Trail, the Sensory Garden, as well as many other locations.
