Introduction
A beautiful city located along the picturesque Susquehanna River is the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and the capital of the state. It’s known to be inhabited since 3000BC by Native tribes, and Captain John Smith arrived in the early 1600 from Virginia to visit the Susquehanna tribe. Over 100 years later John Harris opened a trading post year and the town was later incorporated and given the name.
Harrisburg is a significant historical city from the American Civil War and it still boasts a number of interesting things to see and do, including:
- Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is a 130,000 square feet exhibition area that includes an IMAX theater, numerous science exhibits, and the Sunoco Theater allows 664 guests to enjoy the ballet, a concert, or a theatrical play.
- Broad Street Market was opened in 1860 and is the oldest continually running farmer’s market in the country, featuring locally grown fruits and vegetables.
- Appalachian Brewing Company was founded 14 years ago and is home to a variety of Scottish, and English Ales that visitors can sample.
- Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the Wildwood Sanctuary that is a marvelous haven for some great flora and wonderful wildlife; plus it has some spectacular nature trails.
- If the traveler hasn’t been on a Riverboat, a dinner cruise on the Pride of the Susquehanna is a relaxing and fun way to spend the evening.
