How to Get Around Rhode Island

A car is easiest, and because the state is small, nothing is more than about an hour away.

Amtrak's Northeast Corridor stops at Providence — around three hours from New York and thirty-five minutes from Boston — and at Kingston for the south coast. Providence is genuinely walkable once you are there.

T.F. Green, just south of the capital, is the state's airport and is markedly easier than flying into Boston and driving down.

Ferries matter here: to Block Island from Point Judith year-round, and seasonal services across the bay. In summer, taking the ferry rather than driving over the bridges avoids the worst of the traffic.

Summer weekend traffic on the bridges and on the roads to the south shore is the single biggest thing to plan around.
