Keep a little mystery in your trip planning: flip this switch on and Explorer Picture Mode shows a stylized version of every place instead of the real photo, so you can go by the description and reviews first and picture it your own way -- turn it off again any time, or reveal the real photo for just one place at a time from its own page.

Forest

Learn about Forest

A concise introduction to Forest, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Changed
Forest is part of Bedford County, Virginia State, United States and is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its area is 14.7 square miles. Forest is widely known as Lynchburg’s rural suburb, with Virginia comprising several subdivided parts of the state that are carved out from the forests and farms around.

Since the past decade, Forest has grown rapidly: it has several shopping centers like Cavalier Corner and a big strip mall next to the town’s post office. It does not have a town center. The highlights of this town for the traveler who comes here is Poplar Forest, the plantation estate of erstwhile President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.

You can also visit the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Fort Early, Lynchburg’s Point of Honor and the Peaks of Otter in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lynchburg is the nearest town, about 10 miles northeast of Forest. If you’re a nature lover, spend some time at the Virginia Safari Park where, on an 180-acre drive through safari, you can see a range of animals roaming free—ostrich, bison, llamas, elk, zebras, deer, giraffes and antelopes. This could be a good day out for the family, particularly if you have little animal-loving kids.

Reaching Forest is not difficult at all. In fact, it is easily accessible by Route 221 and U.S. Route 460, while he nearest railway line is Amtrak's Crescent Train at the Lynchburg Station. The closest large airport is Lynchburg Regional Airport.
