Museum of the Confederacy
Overview
Richmond, Virginia, USA, is home to the famous Museum of the Confederacy. This monument houses what was the White House of the Confederacy and contains a wide collection of manuscripts, photographs and artifacts depicting the American Civil War and the Confederate States of America.
In 1896, it was opened as the Confederate Museum. It was founded by the society ladies of Richmond. Since then, it houses the largest collection of artifacts, memorabilia, personal effects and other items of important heroes of the USA like Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, John Bell Hood, Thomas Jonathan Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, Simon Bolivar Buckner, J.E.B. Stuart, etc.
It also has over 500 battle, wartime and original flags that were used by the Confederate Army. In 1976, a new building that better suited their needs of preservation of items and exhibits was opened and was adjacent to the White House.
At the White House of the Confederacy was home to President Jefferson Davis and his family from 1861-1865. If you visit this museum, you will be able to visit 11 rooms restored in this mansion of early 19th century America.
The Museum and White House of the Confederacy are situated two blocks away from the Virginia State Capitol and within a short walk's distance from historic sites such as the Executive Mansion of Virginia, St. Paul's Church, John Marshall House, Monumental Church, and the John Wickham House.
