Overview

Changed
Lying on its back in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is the Sleeping Giant Rock Formation. When viewed from the west the mass of hills and mesas looks like a large man sleeping on his back. Even a closer look reveals a distinctive Adam's apple near Squaw Bay. If you want to visit this natural wonder of Canada is it best to do so through the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

The Provincial Park combines waterfront walks on Lake Superior with rugged hiking trails through the boreal forest, up the cliffs, and into the heart of the Sleeping Giant. There are also facilities for camping, fishing, and boating. The campsites are well equipped with showers, restroom facilities, and playgrounds. Camping costs between $22 and $42 per night, depending on the location and facilities of the campground. If roughing it is not your thing, you can also contact the Marie Louise Campground for information about all-weather cabin rentals.

There are other ways that you can enjoy the Sleeping Giant as well. An organization called Friends of the Sleeping Giant offer year round activities in honor of this famous formation. For instance, there is an annual photography contest. There is also the Festival of the Giant held every year in early August that has food, beach games, entertainment, and children's programs. This group has been in existence since 1993 and is dedicated to promoting and educating visitors about the Sleeping Giant rock formation.
