Río Celeste sat largely unknown outside local communities until scientific interest and, later, wider tourism attention turned to its unusual color starting in the mid-20th century. For years, local legend held that the sky had dipped its brushes into the river after painting itself blue — a story that persisted even after scientists eventually confirmed the real chemical explanation in the 2010s. Tenorio Volcano National Park itself was established in 1995, protecting the river's watershed along with the surrounding rainforest and the dormant Tenorio Volcano.
