Hesse is a state in Germany covering an area of approximately 21,110 km with over six million people currently living there. The capital of Hesse is Wiesbaden. The largest share of the Rhine Main Area is Hesse.
Hesse is in west-central Germany which borders Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Thuringia, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria.
The main cities northwest within Hesse are Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt, Wiesbaden, Hanau, GieBen, Offenbach, and Limburg. Fulda and Rhine Main Area are located in the east and Marburg an der Lahn and Kassel are located in the north.
The Fulda and Eder rivers are located north of Hesse and Lahn River is within the central part of Hesse. The Main and Rhine rivers are located in the south of Hesse. Hesse has hilly countryside with many mountain ranges such as the Westerwald, the Taunus, the Rhon, the Vogelsberg, the Knull and the Spessart. The name “Hesse” comes from an English word meaning masculine with the female version of the word in feminine form is Hessin.
The transportation department in Hesse is one of the best in Europe. Numerous trans-European and German freeways cross Hesse. High-speed trains also can be found here. Near the Hesse airport is the Frankfurter Kreuz which is Europe’s very important motorway, autobahns A3 and A5 meet.
