Known as the “Free State”, Saxony is one of the sixteen states that make up the country of Germany. Situated on the southeastern part of the country, Saxony is the tenth largest state as well as the state with the sixth largest population in Germany.

Although the state is one of the lesser known states in Germany, it is nevertheless one that is worth visiting. After all, the state of Saxony has everything and anything that you are looking for to make your trip one that you would never forget. Indeed, Saxony is a kaleidoscope of lush, picturesque landscapes, spectacular monuments and buildings, quaint romantic towns, a vibrant nightlife and a rich cultural heritage.

If you are traveling to Saxony for the first time, make sure to visit the region of Saxon Elbland. The region is home to the Saxon wine trail. Spanning 50 kilometers long and crossing through the cities of Dresden, Meissen and Pirna, the Saxon wine trail is home to numerous vineyards that make 21 different varieties of red and white wines. Many of these vineyards open their cellars to the public where they are not only able to sample the vintage in different stages. They are also able to purchase a bottle or two which they can take home as a souvenir. You can also sample these fine wines in the many wine bars located around the area.

The best time to visit the state of Saxony is on the months of August and September during the Leipzig Mendelssohn Festival. During these months, locals and tourists alike are treated to a never-ending list of concerts and performances by some of the top orchestras and ensembles in Germany and Europe.
