Although Friuli Venecia Giuli region of Italy is the smallest of the country, it offers an incredible cultural variety. Austria and Slovenia borders it. The northern area is dominated by the Alps while the coastal areas are mostly plain.

Considering the Friuli Venezia Giulia cuisine, it is important to mention that it can be consider the more rustic cuisine of Italy. Two of the most famous food produced in this region is the local Prosciutto di San Danielle and a sweet ham which is hung for some time in order to get the fresh air of the zone. Polenta is also one of the most popular meals in this area. Additionally, you must try the dry Tocai wine. Even though the economy is mostly based on agriculture other industries in chemical, textile and furniture sector are also present.

The Castle of Udine was actually built in 16th century but was damaged after the 1976 earthquake. After a major restoration, currently the castle is home to the Civic Museum and Galleries of Ancient and Modern Art.
