The mosque

The mosque rises on a platform about 10 metres above the city. Three sandstone gateways open onto a square courtyard roughly 99 metres to a side, centred on a marble ablution tank and edged by arcades.

Across the west side, the 61-by-27-metre prayer hall forms a long red wall punctuated by a large central arch and ten smaller arches. Three striped marble domes sit above it. At both ends, 41-metre minarets repeat vertical bands of sandstone and white marble.

The interior is quieter in pattern but still strongly ordered: seven bays answer seven prayer niches, and black-and-white marble marks individual prayer positions on the floor.
