A concise introduction to Mysuru, its geography, history and culture.
Introduction
Mysuru—still widely called Mysore—lies below Chamundi Hill in southern Karnataka. The city became a Wadiyar capital after the fall of Tipu Sultan in 1799, and its present identity joins court ritual, a carefully planned civic landscape, public institutions and working markets. Mysore Palace is the visual centre, but Devaraja Market, Jaganmohan Palace, the university precinct, museums, lakes and radial streets make the wider city worth reading.
Mysuru Dasara turns the palace, hill and processional route into one of Karnataka's largest annual gatherings. Outside the festival, silk, painting, rosewood inlay, sandalwood products, food and yoga connect historic names to contemporary businesses of uneven provenance. Mysuru in India works best over several days, with early walking, direct access checks and a clear distinction between city sights and regional excursions.

Are Mysuru and Mysore the same city?
Yes. Mysuru became the official English name in 2014. Mysore remains common in speech and in historic institutions and registered product names.
How many days should I allow?
Three full days cover the palace–market core, Chamundi Hill, and one museum, lake, zoo or craft thread without rushing. Add days for regional excursions.
When is the broadest weather window?
November through February. March is still relatively dry but warmer; October can combine Dasara with the year's highest normal monthly rainfall.
Can I see the palace illumination every evening?
Do not assume so. Check the current official palace or Dasara schedule, including language, ticketing and security arrangements.
Is Chamundi Hill only a viewpoint?
No. It is an active temple and pilgrimage landscape. Worship, queues and festival controls take priority over sightseeing.
Can I walk everywhere?
Walk within the palace–market core. Use buses or short authorised rides for Chamundi Hill, the zoo–Karanji cluster, the university district and outer accommodation.
Are Brindavan Gardens and Srirangapatna in Mysuru city?
No. They are separate regional destinations, mainly in neighbouring Mandya district, and need their own access and return plan.
How do I buy genuine Mysuru crafts?
Ask for the maker, materials, production location and relevant certification. A city name or palace motif alone does not establish origin.
