How to get around Mysuru

Getting around

Start with the palace–Devaraja Market–civic core. Distances are manageable, but large junctions, traffic, heat and uneven footways make a simple map line slower than it appears. Cross where sight lines are clear and avoid blocking market approaches.

KSRTC operates city and intercity buses, with live route and booking details split across its current services. Ask whether a bus uses the city, suburban or another stand; “Mysore” may still appear in booking systems.

Auto-rickshaws, taxis and app-based services fill gaps between clusters. Use an authorised pickup, agree on the meter or displayed fare and keep the destination written in Kannada or mapped.

Chamundi Hill is a separate movement problem. Temple days and Dasara can change road access, parking and bus arrangements. Go early and follow police or district controls.

A bicycle is appealing on quieter planned roads, but mixed traffic and major circles demand experience. Walking or cycling after dark needs lighting and a route chosen for actual footways, not only distance.

Rail

Mysuru Junction is close to the centre and is often the most practical arrival from Bengaluru. Use Indian Railways for the exact train, station, platform and live running information; never build a same-day flight connection around an assumed journey time.

Intercity and city bus

KSRTC links Mysuru with Bengaluru and other Karnataka destinations and also publishes city-service information. Search both “Mysuru” and legacy “Mysore” where an operator still uses the older spelling.

Airport

Mysuru Airport at Mandakalli is south of the city and handles domestic operations. Route availability can be limited or seasonal. Confirm the operating flight before relying on it; AAI lists current ground-transport information.

Within the centre

Walk the palace, market and nearby civic sights as one cluster. Use short buses or authorised rides for the zoo, Karanji Lake, university district, Lalitha Mahal and accommodation farther out.

Regional excursions

Srirangapatna, Brindavan Gardens, Ranganathittu, Somanathapura and forest destinations require separate road or rail planning. Verify the actual gate or station, return transport and current institution hours.
