Last updated on October 20, 2026The monument
A single broad arch rises 26 metres above the waterfront, its basalt mass divided by a recessed central opening and capped by a shallow dome. Four turrets mark the corners.
From the plaza, the eye passes through the arch toward boats and harbour. From the seaward side, the same opening frames the city, with the Taj Mahal Palace's domed roof nearby.
The monument has no visitor interior comparable to a museum. Its space is the threshold itself: land on one side, water on the other and a constant flow around the base.
