Introduction
Mumbai is the largest city in India and is the capital of the Maharashtra region. By many, this city is often referred to as the heart of commercial and financial sectors in India, contributing around 5 % of its GDP. Earlier known as Bombay, the city got its new name, Mumbai in 1995.
Mumbai is situated at the mouth of Ulhas River flowing on the western coast. The city predominantly sits on the Salsette Island, with most of the cities raised averagely around 10 m to 14 m above the sea level. The major portion of the city lies near the Arabian Sea owing to which it experiences largely two seasons, namely, humid and dry. The city does not witness winters due to its close proximity to the Arabian Sea. The humid season ranges from March till October and is characterized by high degree of humidity and average temperature of 30 degree Celsius. The dry season ranges from November to February followed by low levels of humidity and cool weather.
The city offers the services of National Highway 4, National Highway, 3 and National Highway 8 among the services offered by Indian National Highways. The roads are ferried by Best Busses, auto rickshaws and taxis. Mumbai Metro is characterized by its underground transit system which is quite a boon to regular commuters. The city is replete with a number of beaches, Girgaum Chowpatty being a prime beach and a hot spot of multi-cultural cuisines. Gateway of India, one of the oldest monuments of Mumbai is a great representation of both Hindu and Muslim art.
