Discover Chennai

A concise introduction to Chennai, its geography, history and culture.

Introduction

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu and a wide coastal metropolis on the Bay of Bengal. Its identity grows from older settlements such as Mylapore and Triplicane, the East India Company town around Fort St George, the port and railway city once called Madras, and modern districts extending south and west.

Come for temple streets, Indo-Saracenic institutions, the Marina waterfront, Tamil food, film and a classical music-and-dance culture strong enough to earn UNESCO Creative City of Music status in 2017. Stay attentive to the city's ecology: Guindy protects dry evergreen habitat, Pallikaranai is a Ramsar wetland and the coast supports nesting turtles. Chennai is one of India's major gateways, but its scale, humidity, traffic and northeast-monsoon rain reward a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood plan.

Is Chennai the same city as Madras?

Yes. Chennai has been the legal name since the 1996 state act. Madras remains in historical discussion, older institutional names and everyday cultural memory.

How many days are useful?

Three full days cover Fort and the Marina, Egmore's museum campus, Mylapore and one performance without constant cross-city travel. Four or five allow Adyar, Guindy, Pallikaranai or a deeper food and arts thread.

When is the easiest time to visit?

January and February are the most reliable broad window for walking. December has major music and dance rewards but can retain rain risk. October and November are normally the wettest months; May and June are the hottest.

Can I swim at Marina Beach?

Do not assume so. Currents can be dangerous. Follow posted warnings and the instructions of lifeguards, police and local authorities; use the shore as a walking and social landscape unless swimming is explicitly permitted and supervised.

Does one Music Season ticket cover everything?

No. Margazhi programming is distributed among many independent sabhas, temples and venues. Check each organiser's current schedule, ticketing and entry rules.

Is Chennai walkable?

Individual neighbourhoods can be rewarding on foot, but the city as a whole is too dispersed. Combine focused walks with Metro, suburban rail, buses or short road transfers.

Is Pallikaranai a park?

It is a protected Ramsar wetland and flood-storage landscape. Access and viewing points are controlled; remain on permitted routes and do not enter habitat.

Can Chennai be combined with Mamallapuram?

Yes, but Mamallapuram is a separate coastal destination. Give it a dedicated outing rather than treating it as a quick stop between central Chennai sights.
