Chennai
How to get around Chennai
Use rail where it fits
Chennai Metro's operational network links the airport with central interchanges and connects Central, Egmore, Guindy, CMBT and other stations. Suburban rail and MRTS reach corridors the Metro does not. Check the current operator map because construction and future lines are not usable routes.
Use buses and short road transfers
Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses provide wide coverage but can be difficult for a first visit without a current route tool. Auto-rickshaws, app-based rides and taxis are useful for the last mile. Confirm the destination, pickup point and fare method before departure.
Walk within neighbourhoods
Mylapore, Triplicane, George Town and parts of the Marina work as focused walks, not as one continuous pedestrian centre. Heat, missing footpath sections and road crossings require time and attention.
Allow for disruption
Peak traffic, Metro construction, processions and heavy rain can change road access. Keep an indoor alternative and never ask a driver to cross standing water or ignore a closure.

Airport
Chennai International Airport has a Metro station on the Blue Line. Verify the correct airline terminal, pickup point and first or last train before relying on the connection; construction or service notices may affect access.
Rail stations
Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G Ramachandran Central and Chennai Egmore are different terminals, both served by Metro. Tambaram and other suburban stations may appear on regional tickets. Read the exact station name and code before arranging a transfer.
Fort, George Town and Marina
Metro and suburban rail can bring you near the historic north and centre, but the final route involves busy roads and security-controlled institutions. Divide the waterfront into manageable segments and do not count on shade.
Mylapore and Adyar
Rail stations and buses serve the area, yet many temple, church and cultural stops still require a road transfer or walk. Festival processions can close the most direct route.
Southern districts
Guindy has strong rail connections; Pallikaranai and farther southern districts usually need road transport. Ask the destination for the correct entrance rather than navigating to the centre of a large map polygon.
Reduced mobility
Metro stations provide lifts and managed access, but street conditions and heritage sites vary. Confirm the complete route from platform to entrance, including steps, thresholds, surface quality and accessible toilets.
