Alatri's attractions are concentrated on one hill and in one kind of stone.

The acropolis is the whole point: a pre-Roman citadel on the hill in the centre of the town, ringed by megalithic polygonal walls of well-jointed local limestone, standing to about nine metres at their highest.

The gates and posterns are where the construction can actually be read: two of perhaps five gates survive to some extent, along with three posterns.

Around and below it, the medieval town carries the fabric of a place that was an important papal stronghold in the twelfth century and a free commune in the thirteenth, governed by consuls until a podestà was introduced in 1241.

And the setting is the Ernici — the mountains that mark the boundary between Lazio and Abruzzo, rising above the town to over a thousand metres within the comune.
