Castel Gandolfo's sights divide between the papal ones on the ridge and the Roman ones below it.
On the ridge: the Apostolic Palace and the Pontifical Villas, now a museum and open to the public, and Bernini's collegiate church of San Tommaso da Villanova, built in 1658–1661 for Alexander VII on a Greek-cross plan and holding a Crucifixion by Pietro da Cortona.
Below and around: the remains of the imperial villa of Domitian, who developed this site into a vast palace, and the emissario of Lake Albano — an artificial outlet cut in Roman times that runs 1,800 metres from the rock below the Villino Manes.
On the water, the Stadio Olimpico on the lake shore hosted the rowing events of the 1960 Rome Olympics.
