The palace

The collections are arranged over two levels and open with thematic cases on the finds from the city's many necropoleis: the Villanovan period from the Sorbo burial ground, then the Hellenistic -- the tomb of the Tasmie and the tomb of the sarcophagi from the Banditaccia -- with bucchero ware, amphorae, funerary vases and several figured sarcophagus lids, original or reproduced. A good deal of what came out of these sites is not here: notable pieces are held at the Museo nazionale etrusco di Villa Giulia and at the Louvre.

Key highlights

The collection is modest and runs over two levels of a medieval castle, but two of the objects in it are among the finest Attic vases in existence.

  • The Euphronios krater -- an Attic red-figure vase of the 5th century B.C., looted near Cerveteri and long exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York before returning.
  • The Euphronios kylix -- its companion, recovered from the Getty Museum at Malibu; both have been at Cerveteri since 2015.
  • The Ruspoli castle -- a 13th-century fortress of tufa, lava and brick with several towers, described by the comune as a true fortified polygon.
  • The Etruscan walls -- stretches of 4th-century B.C. walling built into the castle's fabric.
  • The Sepolcreto del Sorbo material -- the Villanovan phase of the Cerite necropoleis, in thematic cases.
  • Tomba dei Tasmie and Tomba dei sarcofagi -- Hellenistic grave groups from the Banditaccia.
  • Bucchero -- the characteristic Etruscan black ware, with amphorae and funerary vases.
  • Figured sarcophagus lids -- some original, some reproductions.
