The man in this tomb outlived five political settlements by abandoning each one in turn, and then wrote his own epitaph listing only the offices. The building's later history is simpler: it stayed standing, was restored, and was turned into a church.

Chronology

  1. c. 87 B.C. Lucius Munatius Plancus is born. He begins his career under Julius Caesar.
  2. 44 B.C. After Caesar's murder Plancus allies himself with one of the assassins, Decimus Junius Brutus.
  3. 43 B.C. He changes sides again and joins the Second Triumvirate.
  4. 42 B.C. Plancus is consul.
  5. 40 B.C. He attaches himself to Mark Antony.
  6. 32 B.C. He deserts Antony for Octavian -- the last of the switches that make him a classic example of surviving dangerous circumstances by shifting allegiance.
  7. 22 B.C. Plancus is censor, with Paullus Aemilius Lepidus. The mausoleum on Monte Orlando is dated to this year and was raised at his own wish: a perfect circle 29.54 m across, 9 m high, under a tumulus, with four barrel-vaulted cells on the cardinal points off a circular ambulacro. The inscription over the door records the temple of Saturn built from the spoils, the land divided at Benevento, and the founding of Lugdunum and Raurica -- Lyon and Basel.
  8. c. 15 B.C. Plancus dies at Gaeta. His is one of the very few tombs of a major Roman figure to survive and remain identifiable, though the body vanished long ago.
  9. 1800s The much-restored tomb is consecrated to the Virgin Mary in the late 19th century -- a continuing religious use, and part of the reason a Republican-era monument is still standing at full height.
  10. Monte Orlando is placed under protection by Regional Law 47 of 22 October, after petitions from environmental associations and many local citizens. The mausoleum is inside the resulting Parco Regionale Urbano.
  11. Regional Law 17 of 31 December renews the protection of the area, which is managed by the Ente Parco Regionale Riviera di Ulisse.
