Cinecittà is a walled studio lot on the via Tuscolana, entered through a low rationalist gate of the 1930s, and the first thing you cross is not a museum but a green park, with scenery standing about in it like garden sculpture.
The props greet you before the buildings do. The Rocking Horse from Pinocchio and the mysterious head of Venusia — made for Fellini's Il Casanova of 1976 — sit out in the open among the trees, weathered and oversized.
The historic buildings are low, long and plain. Pale rendered blocks with regular windows, laid out along straight roads; inside them the four exhibition routes are dark, screened spaces full of images, videos, interviews and original costumes.
Then there is a submarine. "Il sottomarino S-33" is the actual set built for U-571 — a steel interior of pipes, valves and bunks, lit low.
The MIAC is the opposite in feel. Projection surfaces, interactive installations, video art and multimedia routes in the dark, with original sculptures from La dolce vita and Ludwig standing in the light.
And outside, a Roman city that is not Roman. The permanent "Roma Antica" set — built for the HBO series Rome — is a street of temple fronts, balustrades and column screens in plaster and timber painted to look like marble, convincing from the front and openly a stage from the side, where scaffolding, cables and the backs of flats are visible, and a modern apartment block shows over the top.
A second set is suburban. The villas of "Un medico in famiglia", which anyone visiting the exhibition and museum can walk into freely.
