Velázquez, Portrait of Innocent X

The collection's masterpiece, and one of the great portraits in European painting. Velázquez does not idealise the pope's face; he is not unflattering either. The sitter was the family's own — Cardinal Giovan Battista Pamphilj before his election in 1644.

Bernini's bust of Innocent X

In the same small room since 1927. Two portraits of one man, in paint and in marble, by two artists at the top of their respective trades, placed so you can look from one to the other.

Caravaggio, twice

The Penitent Magdalene and the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, both in the Saletta del Seicento. The second is among the gentlest pictures he ever painted, which surprises people who know him only for the violence.

Raphael and Titian

In the Saletta del Cinquecento: a double portrait by Raphael and a Salome by Titian.

The Galleria degli Specchi

The mirrored second gallery, with antique Roman statues and Antonio Tempesta's Crossing of the Red Sea. The mirrors were the point: they doubled a collection and the light that fell on it.
