Sutri's attractions are almost all carved out of a single tufa outcrop, which makes it one of the most coherent small archaeological towns in Lazio.
The Roman amphitheatre is the set piece: completely excavated out of the tufa rather than built up from it.
The Etruscan necropolis beside it consists of dozens of tombs, also cut into the rock.
The Mithraeum is the most unusual survival — a temple of Mithras later transformed into a church, dedicated to the Madonna del Parto.
The walls carry their own chronology, with Etruscan masonry incorporated into the medieval circuit.
And the Duomo, of Romanesque origin, stands in the medieval town above.
