Casa Chianti Classico, Radda in Chianti
Last updated on October 16, 2026Why visit Casa Chianti Classico, Radda in Chianti
Because the boundary of Chianti Classico is three hundred years old and this is where you can see the paperwork.
The permanent exhibition traces the delimitation of the Chianti wine zone from Cosimo de' Medici's edict of 1716 to the present day. Around it runs a sensory route through interactive rooms, tasted blind, with a room for Chianti Classico DOP olive oil added in 2022 and a video room.
The friction is that it is a wine centre, and it keeps restaurant hours. Closed Monday and Tuesday; Wednesday and Thursday 11:00–17:00; Friday and Saturday 11:00–16:00 and again 18:00–20:00; Sunday 11:00–16:00. The sensory route must be started 30 minutes before closing at the latest.
The smart way is simply to turn up — in the right half of the week. No booking is needed unless you are more than ten. And the building repays the visit on its own: an eighteenth-century convent with a cloister, the friars' refectory, a terrace over the Chianti hills, and a Neri di Bicci of 1474 in the church.

Visit responsibly
This is a working business in a historic convent. The bistrot, the enoteca and the event spaces pay for the restoration of a Settecento building that would otherwise have no use, and the ticketed route funds the interpretation.
The cloister and the refectory are rooms, not ruins. They are in daily use for courses, meals and events; treat them as you would any working interior.
Taste responsibly, then think about the drive. This is a wine centre at the bottom of a hill town in a comune with no railway station and ridge roads in every direction.
Buy the oil as well as the wine. The operator added an olive-oil room in 2022 precisely because oil is the Chianti's less remunerative crop, and it is the one that most needs buyers if the landscape is to keep its olives.
Walk down from the town. The convent is on the ring road just below the centre; the centre is a limited-traffic zone. There is no reason to drive the last three hundred metres.

When to visit
Wednesday to Sunday, and not Monday or Tuesday. That is the single most useful thing to know: the Casa is closed Monday and Tuesday, which catches out a lot of people touring the Chianti on a short week.
Arrive with half an hour in hand. The sensory route must be begun at latest 30 minutes before closing — which on Friday and Saturday means by 15:30 for the afternoon session, since the building shuts at 16:00 and reopens at 18:00.
Come at lunchtime if you want to eat. The kitchen runs 12:30–15:00; the happy hour is Friday and Saturday 18:00–20:00.
Book if you are a group. No booking is required for fewer than ten; above that it is.
Seasonally it hardly matters, which makes this the one reliable wet-weather and winter attraction in Radda — the rest of the comune's sights are outdoors.
